Ah the last blog of the quarter, and what we have done in second life. I liked second life once we got down to it. I think we need to be more familiar on what goes on in second life first then we can start with part of the class. My thinking is lets kinda dive into to, I guess the sink or swim idea comes into play here. At first I must admit I was a bit lost in setting up all the info and the user interface in the class, but once that got done it was all gravy from there. As i logged on more the better it got, the only thing is I think we need some places to go other than the UC Island and I hated to search the web for a place to go because some were weird, very very weird and I will leave it at that. The best thing about second life is the ability to roam where you want when you want to. Their are some cool places on-line ie I went to Rome, like 5 BC Rome! I mean how cool is that? The list for this goes on and on. I didn’t like how long it took to navigate to a place or try to find it it if didn’t you didn’t type in the place just right, it’s like C++ which I hated. I did like the note cards but I wish they would come out with a better interface with that, with a game it gets a bit boring reading those, particularlly when it is long. I think I will still use it when I get out if for anything a boredom buster =)

Our community partner was the Disabled American Veterans (DAV for short) looked like an average warehouse building. To be honest I was expecting the building to have a ton of war items in it but that is not their main focus there however, there was a small museum with a few personal items along with donated Harley Davidson models. When we first walked in you are greeted by the sectary who was very busy person, Then we moved to an area where they update membership information along with postage, this is crucial because most of their funds about 80% come from donations. We then went to the mail room and spent the next 30 minutes learning the process of the mail room how things get mailed and such, to whom and why. After all that we went into their meeting room and talked about what they might went in the island, although Matt didn’t offer a lot to work with. He basically told us to do what we thought would be great and left it at that. The only thing was I wish we could have gone earlier in the quarter to see what went on in a daily basis and who we were working for so to speak.
Blog assignment #2

Ah here we are building things in a vitrual world. I must say things have been a bit tough as you can most likely see by the many postings of my tests , it’s kinda funny. I did the Ivory Tower walkthrough and thought it was pretty good, but myself not being the best reader in the world I found the best thing to be the walkthrough that is on youtube. I still think in some parts it moves way to quick. I would really love to crate a very slow moving walkthrough one of these days but that will not be for a while.
There are many ways to edit, create, rotate and move your prims aka priminitive, these are the “building blocks that shape second life. There is great news any one of us can create them so that makes it nice. Now down to the basics you can move an object by holding down the different color arrows and moving them with the dirrection it says to. You can also rotate any object that you create by holding down the (control) button. There are different colors for different dirrections, just give it a shot and you will learn.
The biggest thing by far is the ability to change the size and duplicate your blocks. To change the size of it all all you have to do is hold crtl+shift and then there are different color blocks that appear (notice a trend yet on this? I hope so, those colors are so very important they are dirrections!) and you can change the thickness, long or short it is. You can also duplicate you block by hold crtl+ d that way if you want to make another block (such as stairs) and don’t want to do it all over again that’s a great way.
You can also link these blocks by by hitting crtl + L and you can to the above mentioned by hitting crtl+D and really start creating your little block of heaven so to speak.
These are just some of the basic functions to do. I will post a bit more on this later as I am still trying to figure out everything. I feel a lot better now that my blodhud is working. It took a while and all it was is a button not clicked, but I guess that’s code for you. Once you get all of these setup it’s very easy to work with.
I will put more in due time but for now I will take what I know and try to go a bit further.

Blog assignment # 1
Posted in Uncategorized with tags #, #1, assignment, blog 1 on February 18, 2008 by valdanzIn the blog here we I am going to tell you what went on with my life and video games and how it all connects. I myslef play video games to relax and have a good time on or offline.
In 1983 we had a video game crash, this we due to an influx of systems in the market much like anything else if you over flood the market it’s everywhere you turn. These was huge for my life because I was right around the corner of being born and the biggest selling album of all time Thriller by Michael Jackson and hit the top of the charts.
In 1986 one of the bewst things to happens to Fami com, they changed their name to Nintendo and that is the start of what we know now. They have such video game titles as Mario Brothers, Techno Super Bolw, Legend of Zela, and Mike Tysons Punch out. This is the year where I learned to walk and talk all very important life skills. This was a big year for NASA as well with one of the first females to go into space that was a teacher, unfortnally the Challanger exploes and the nation is left to grieve.
In t1990 one of the biggest things to hit techonoly is introduced to the pubilc in a user friendly form, the internet. I remember our first internet was through a serice called comp-serve. There were games to download and wow did they take forever to do over the modem, nothing like today were you click it and it’s there. this was also a big time for our nation becuase our troops were heading to Iraq for the Golf War.
In 1192 one of the best first person shooters to date is released Wolfenstein 3D. This is what really kicks off the gaming movement and paves the way for game like Halo in my personal opinion. In this year we have one of th biggest malls ever constructed The Mall of American In Minnesota.
In 1194 Sega was released this is started Sonic and the Sega revolution, however it didn’t last very long as Sega now is not the player they used to be. This was also a bad year for Baseball as the players went on strike and my love for baseball went away, I have not really followed baseball sience.
In 1998 Dance Dance Revolution is relased starting the craze of pads in the home along with people in the malls trying to pull off their dance skills and people showing they may have a big of talent. I also believe this lead the way for games such as guitar hero. It was also a first for our nation as Bill and Monica we caught in the Whitehouse and shows lik Saturday Night Live have fuel for years to come.
